Unclear use of copilot-instructions.md in GitHub Copilot App #45699

What article on docs.github.com is affected?

Customizing the GitHub Copilot app

What part(s) of the article would you like to see updated?

Currently, the article only mentions instructions set up through the in-app UI. However, it seems to me all other GitHub Copilot products (CLI, VS Code, VS, etc.) make use of the .github/copilot-instructions.md file. That file is, however, not mentioned in the article above.

I think one of two things are missing:

  1. The article should mention/link to how .github/copilot-instructions.md is used and possibly how you can see proof that it's being used in a specific agent session (currently, I'm not sure how to confirm this).
  2. If .github/copilot-instructions.md is not actually used when working from the GitHub Copilot app, then I would make a feature request for that (not sure which repo this belongs to). It's not intuitive that this file is ignored, and it's unclear how global instructions can be shared with a team working on the same repo (other than manually sending a copy to everyone).
